Chat capture

Chat capture is the automatic recording of your conversations on chatgpt.com and claude.ai. Every exchange is captured as it happens and shown live in the sidebar's Collect tab, turn by turn, with versions kept when a prompt is rerun. This page covers the live conversation: how recording works, the conversation header, turns and versions, and every action on a captured turn. The saved side lives in individual conversation and the conversations main page.

Prerequisites:

How recording works#

  • Recording is automatic: Once you are signed in, every conversation on chatgpt.com and claude.ai records itself. There is no start button and nothing to configure.
  • Conversations are captured in turns: A turn is one prompt and its response. Each turn appears in Collect as a pair of cards: a USER card with an orange accent, and an ASSISTANT card with a green accent.
  • The title writes itself: Cognardo Workbench detects the conversation and assigns a title, then updates it as the chat takes shape. You can rename it at any time.
  • Storage follows your sync setting: With Enable Cloud Sync & Intelligence on, captured conversations back up to your account and sync across devices. Off, they stay on the current device. Sync controls are covered in settings.

Watch the live conversation#

  1. Open a chat on chatgpt.com or claude.ai and send a message.
  2. Click the green floater dot, then click Open sidebar for more actions.
  3. Open the Collect tab if it is not already active. The sidebar reopens on the tab you last used.

The conversation is already there: your message as a USER card, the reply as an ASSISTANT card, and new cards appearing as the chat continues.

The conversation header#

The header row at the top of Collect carries the conversation itself:

  • Title: The detected conversation title, with the platform icon beside it. Long titles truncate to fit the sidebar.
  • Edit title: The pencil control turns the title into an editable field. Type the new title to rename the conversation.
  • Add to favorites: The star marks the conversation as a favorite.
  • Open: The third control opens the conversation outside the sidebar.

Turns and versions#

Each card carries a version badge: v1, v2, and so on. Edit a prompt in the chat and rerun it, and the turn gains a new version while every earlier draft is kept. No draft is lost.

Cards open in a compact preview. Two controls change that:

  • Expand: Opens the full text of the turn inside the card. A long response scrolls inside the card, independent of the main page, so the chat stays where it is.
  • Collapse: Returns the card to its compact preview.

Actions on a user turn#

Five actions sit at the bottom of every USER card:

  • Scroll here: Scrolls the main page to that message in the chat.
  • Copy: Copies the prompt text.
  • Save: Saves the prompt to your prompt library. See save prompts.
  • Run again: Resubmits the prompt in the chat.
  • Pin: Pins the turn. Pinned turns gather in the Pins tab on the main extension page and can be inserted into any chat later. See the conversations main page.

Actions on an assistant turn#

The ASSISTANT card carries its own set:

  • Scroll here: Scrolls the main page to that response in the chat.
  • Copy: Copies the response text.
  • Save to scratchpad: Sends the response to your active scratchpad. See scratchpads.
  • Pin: Pins the turn, same as on a user card.
  • Citation and hallucination analysis: Checks each claim in the response against its cited sources and builds a report. The action shows its credit cost, and the report opens with Open Report, in the sidebar or a new tab.

With Auto track citations on, Cognardo Workbench tracks every link a response cites and checks its live status. A status strip appears under the assistant card's actions, counting the cited links and their state: working, failed, and unresolved, with an expand control on the strip itself. A dead link surfaces here before it reaches your deliverable.

The Auto track citations toggle lives in the pop-up and in settings.

FAQ#

Do I need to start or stop recording?+

No. Recording is automatic while you are signed in. Open Collect at any point and the conversation is already captured.

Does chat capture work on Claude?+

Yes. Capture behaves identically on chatgpt.com and claude.ai: the same cards, the same actions, the same versioning.

Does recording use AI credits?+

No. Recording, turn actions, and pinning never cost credits. Credits apply only to Enhance actions, such as Citation and hallucination analysis.

What do the v1, v2 badges mean?+

Versions of that turn. Editing and rerunning a prompt creates a new version, and every earlier one is kept.

Where do captured conversations end up?+

In the Conversations tab of the main extension page, searchable and exportable. See the conversations main page.
