Insert Prompt from Sidebar
Insert a prompt from the sidebar
Inserting a prompt from the sidebar places a saved prompt into the chat input in one click. The Insert Prompt/Pin action on the Act tab opens your library beside the chat: search it, preview a prompt, and insert it as editable text that is never sent automatically. This page covers finding and inserting prompts, the Fill Prompt Variables dialog for template prompts, and the Pin tab beside the prompt list.
Prerequisites:
- Signed in: Insertion requires a signed-in account. See sign in to the extension.
- Saved prompts: Anything in your library is insertable. See save a prompt from the sidebar.
- A chat page open: chatgpt.com or claude.ai, with the chat input on the page.
Open the Insert view#
- Click the green floater dot, then click Open sidebar for more actions.
- Open the Act tab if it is not already active.
- Click Insert Prompt/Pin. The Insert view opens, with a back arrow beside the heading and two tabs at the top: Prompt, selected by default, and Pin.
Find the prompt#
- Search: The Search prompts… field filters the list as you type, matching titles, content, model, and tags. An over-narrow query shows "No prompts found"; shorten it and the list returns.
- Filters: Select Tags… and Select Models… narrow the list by tag and target model. Filtering by a parent tag includes everything nested under it. See search and filter.
- Favorites first: Prompts you have favorited group in their own section above the rest of the library.
- Preview: The chevron on a card expands the full prompt content inside the sidebar; its tooltip reads Expand, then Collapse. Previewing never touches the chat input.
Insert it#
- Click the orange plus icon on the prompt's card. Its tooltip reads Insert.
- The prompt text lands in the chat input, and a confirmation reads Prompt inserted.
- The text is editable and nothing is sent. Adjust it, add to it, then send it yourself.
Fill in variables#
A prompt whose content carries {{variable}} placeholders asks for its values at insertion:
- Click Insert on the prompt. The Fill Prompt Variables dialog opens instead of inserting immediately.
- Fill in each field. Every variable in the prompt gets one input, and a variable written as {{variable:default}} arrives pre-filled with its default.
- Click Insert Prompt. The values replace every occurrence of their variable, and the finished text lands in the chat input.
Cancel closes the dialog without inserting anything. Writing variables into a prompt is covered in save a prompt from the sidebar.
The Pin tab#
Pin sits beside Prompt in the Insert view and lists your pinned conversation turns, newest first, each with its source conversation and model. Prompt pins and response pins both insert the same way: click the insert control and the pinned content lands in the chat input, editable. Pinning itself happens on conversations; see the conversations main page.
FAQ#
Does inserting send the prompt?+
No. Insertion places the text in the chat input and stops. You review, edit, and send it yourself.
Does inserting use AI credits?+
No. Insertion is free on every plan. Credits apply only to Enhance actions.
The target model says ChatGPT. Can I still insert it on claude.ai?+
Yes. The target model is organisational metadata for filtering and grouping. Any prompt inserts on either platform, and the whole flow behaves identically on chatgpt.com and claude.ai.
I clicked Insert and nothing happened. What now?+
Click inside the chat input and try again; insertion needs an active input on the page. If it keeps failing, refresh the tab. Persisting problems are covered in troubleshooting.
Is there a faster way than opening the sidebar?+
Yes. Type // in the chat input and insert from the keyboard. See insert a prompt with the shortcut.
