Insert a Scratchpad with the Shortcut
Insert a scratchpad with the shortcut
The // shortcut brings collected material back into the conversation without leaving the keyboard. Type // in the chat input, choose //scratchpad, pick a scratchpad, and its content lands in the input as editable text, nothing sent. It is the fast route from collection to conversation: research gathered across chats and pages, dropped into the next prompt in a few keystrokes. This page covers the scratchpad command end to end. The full key-by-key reference for the shortcut menu is canonical on insert a prompt with the shortcut.
Prerequisites:
- Signed in: The shortcut runs on a signed-in account. See sign in to the extension.
- Something collected: The command inserts from your scratchpads. See save the last response.
- A chat page open: chatgpt.com or claude.ai, with the cursor in the chat input.
Open the shortcut menu#
- Click into the chat input.
- Type //. The shortcut menu opens above the input with its three commands: //prompt, //pin, and //scratchpad.
- Choose //scratchpad:
- Keep typing to narrow the commands, or move the highlight with the up and down arrow keys.
- Press Tab to choose it. The menu switches to your scratchpads.
Insert the content#
- Find the scratchpad in the list. The active scratchpad sits first, your saved scratchpads follow, and typing filters the list by name.
- Move the highlight to the one you want with the arrow keys.
- Press Tab. The scratchpad's content replaces the // trigger text in the chat input, and a confirmation reads Scratchpad inserted.
- The text is editable and nothing is sent. Trim it to what the prompt needs, add your instruction around it, then send it yourself.
The content arrives as it stands#
- The whole scratchpad, current version: Insertion takes the full content as it reads right now, edits included, so an edit pass before inserting is how a raw collection becomes a clean insert. See edit a scratchpad on the main page.
- A copy, not a link: What lands in the input is a copy. Editing it there, or sending it, never changes the scratchpad itself.
FAQ#
Does inserting send the content?+
No. Tab places the content in the chat input and stops. You review, edit, and send it yourself.
Can I insert only part of a scratchpad?+
Not from the shortcut; the chosen scratchpad inserts whole. Trim the text in the input after it lands, or run an edit pass first so the scratchpad holds only what you want inserted. Selection saves are the other half of that discipline. See save a selected response.
Which scratchpads appear in the list?+
All of them: the active scratchpad first, then your saved collection, filtered by name as you type. Inserting from a saved scratchpad never changes which one is active.
Does the shortcut use AI credits?+
No. Insertion is free on every plan. Credits apply only to the AI features that run on scratchpad content. See Expand / Shorten.
Does it work the same on claude.ai?+
Yes. The trigger, the list, and the insertion behave identically on chatgpt.com and claude.ai, over the same collection.
