View Scratchpads in the Sidebar
View scratchpads in the sidebar
The sidebar's Scratchpad tab is your collection beside the chat: the active scratchpad at the top, open in view mode, with every saved scratchpad listed beneath it and search over the list. It is the reading and switching surface: check what you have collected, find an older scratchpad, and change which one is active, all without leaving the conversation. This page covers the tab control by control. What the states mean is covered in the active scratchpad and saved scratchpads.
Prerequisites:
- Signed in: Scratchpads require a signed-in account. See sign in to the extension.
- Something collected: The tab is at its most useful once saves have landed. See save the last response.
Open the Scratchpad tab#
- Click the green floater dot, then click Open sidebar for more actions.
- Open the Scratchpad tab if it is not already active. The sidebar reopens on the tab you last used.
The active scratchpad at the top#
The top of the tab belongs to the scratchpad on duty:
- Name and word count: The active scratchpad's name with its live word count beside it, the same count the pop-up's SCRATCHPAD row shows, so the size of the collection stays visible.
- The content, in view mode: The collected material reads in place and scrolls inside the tab, so a long scratchpad never pushes the chat around.
- Where saves land: Every one-click save routes here, from the floater, the quick-action strip, and the Collect cards. The routes are covered in save the last response.
The saved list#
Beneath the active scratchpad sits the rest of the collection:
- One row per scratchpad: Each saved scratchpad appears with its name and word count, holding its content exactly as it stood when it stepped aside.
- Search: The search field over the list narrows it as you type, so an older scratchpad is a few keystrokes away even in a long collection.
- Reading a saved scratchpad: Open one from its row and it shows in view mode, read-only, without disturbing which scratchpad is active.
Mark a scratchpad active#
Switching which scratchpad receives saves happens here:
- Find the scratchpad in the saved list. Search narrows it as you type.
- Use the mark-active control on its row.
- The swap completes in place:
- The chosen scratchpad moves to the top of the tab as the active one.
- The one it replaced keeps everything it holds and joins the saved list.
From the next save on, material lands in the newly active scratchpad. The state model behind the swap is covered in saved scratchpads.
View mode, and where editing lives#
Everything in this tab is view mode: read the content, search the collection, save into the active scratchpad, and change which one is active. Content itself is never edited here. Editing lives in one place, the editor on the main extension page, covered in edit a scratchpad on the main page. Inserting scratchpad content into the chat has its own routes, covered in insert from the sidebar.
FAQ#
Can I edit a scratchpad from the sidebar?+
No. The tab is view mode throughout: reading, searching, saving into the active scratchpad, and switching states. Editing happens in the editor on the main extension page. See edit a scratchpad on the main page.
How do I change which scratchpad my saves go to?+
Mark a different one active from its row in the saved list. The current active scratchpad steps aside with its content intact.
Does viewing a saved scratchpad make it active?+
No. Opening one from the list is read-only. Only the mark-active control changes which scratchpad is on duty.
What does search match?+
The saved list filters by name as you type. For search across scratchpad content alongside prompts, sequences, and conversations, use Search Anything in the sidebar header. See search and filter.
Is the tab the same on claude.ai?+
Yes. The tab, the states, and the swap behave identically on chatgpt.com and claude.ai, over the same collection.
